Garfield S.T.E.A.M. Elementary

Sand Springs Public Schools needed their 1940s elementary school to meet the district’s modern functional and aesthetic standards while honoring the building’s historical characteristics. KKT’s design team was faced with the challenge of updating the school’s nearly 75-year-old classrooms, infusing them with the newest technology while transforming them into flexible learning environments. KKT designed a new secure entry to address current student safety concerns. The addition also provides a new commercial kitchen, cafeteria seating area, music room, library, four additional kindergarten classrooms, and a FEMA safe room, while the renovation remodeled administration areas, several classrooms, and specialized learning centers. Outdoor spaces were creatively reconfigured to capture open-air learning spaces and improve playground safety.
